What is a Discord Server Boost?
A Discord Server Boost is a purchasable upgrade that members apply to a server to unlock premium perks for everyone in that community. As a server collects more Boosts, it climbs through three Boost Levels: 1, 2, and 3. Each level unlocks better audio quality, more emoji and sticker slots, larger file uploads, and cosmetic features like animated icons and banners.
Boosts are a shared, community-wide benefit rather than a personal one.
How many Boosts does each Server Boost Level require?
Discord uses a three-tier system with cumulative Boost thresholds: Level 1 requires 2 Boosts, Level 2 requires 7 Boosts, and Level 3 requires 14 Boosts. Each level includes all perks from the levels below it, so a Level 3 server keeps everything unlocked at Levels 1 and 2.
What are Additional Perks?
Additional Perks are a newer feature that lets servers unlock specific enhancements independently of their Boost Level. The two current options are Server Tags and Enhanced Role Styles, each requiring 3 Boosts to enable.
Server Tags give members a short identifier that displays on their profile across Discord, while Enhanced Role Styles add animated gradient and holographic effects to server roles. These Boosts are separate from the ones maintaining your server level — you need unallocated Boosts to enable them.
How do you Boost a Discord server?
Open the server you want to Boost, click the server name at the top of the channel list to open the dropdown, then select Server Boost. Click "Boost This Server" and confirm.
If you have unused Boosts from Nitro, you can apply them directly. If not, Discord will prompt you to purchase one.
What do members who Boost a server get in return?
Members who Boost a server receive a Server Booster badge on their Discord profile that evolves the longer they maintain a boosting streak, plus a special Nitro Booster role that the server owner can customize with a name, color, and permissions.
Many communities use this role to grant boosters access to exclusive channels or perks, though the specific rewards are set by each server owner.
